There will be another new mixed show in New York at the Foley Gallery on the Lower East side. It’s called The Colour of Water and runs from April 7th to May 16th. I will have four works in the show.

A number of solo exhibitions are planned for this year. There will be four online exhibitions with Zephyr and Maize in New York, the first will be ‘Dreamscapes’ opening on 8th April until 23rd June. Three others will follow called ‘Colour Red’, ‘The Boats’ and ‘Works on paper’. There will also be a ‘real’ actual solo exhibition with the New Ashgate Gallery in Farnham in June. This is called ‘Small Size Only’ consisting of smaller-scale works.

Solo exhibition in London at Darnley Fine Art, 8 Cecil Court from Feb 5th to March 4th. This is an exhibition of early works dated 1975 to 1984, most haven’t been seen for over 40 years. Most are also acrylic on canvas – referred to as ‘Urban Realism’.

I shall be exhibiting in the Sunday Times Watercolour Competition this September at the Mall Galleries, London. Also at the Baarn Art and Antiques Fair in Baarn, in Holland in September. Also delighted to be asked to be a selector for the forthcoming Ferens Open art exhibition in Hull.

Very slow with the news I’m afraid though I have been posting new work almost every two weeks. Last year was a sabbatical of sorts, no exhibitions and a lot of experimenting in the studio. Some of the results can be found in ‘New Works’ and ‘Negative Spaces’ and ‘Single Lines’. I may be showing soon and will post here and on Instagram/Facebook. Although there have been no shows, I have been very active in other areas mostly in the usage of my work. There have been sightings in a Hollywood film, a new American TV series this summer, a classic music album cover to come out soon plus many more. There seems to be a constant demand, not on an industrial scale (!) but nevertheless every month my work appears somewhere including an eight-page interview for a South Korean Art/Culture/Style magazine out soon (see here) . What is gratifying for me as an artist is that the timescale range of the works being reproduced spans my whole ‘career’. For the instance the American tv series, starring Kevin Bacon, has a 1976 painting in it -in what context, I don’t know. But this was a work that lay in a collectors loft for over 20 years because no one liked it.

At the end of this month, I will be having an online studio sale, the first time I have done this. I’ve selected thirty small framed works from different eras and these will be 50% off exhibition prices and no vat. In one sense it is in response to a number of people who have posted that they would like to own one of my paintings but couldn’t afford to do so. I’m also helping in that I will accept payment in reasonable instalments if it is required. Please check the website or information on Facebook/Instagram around the 28th of July. If paintings are to be shipped then carriage charges will be on top of the listed price.

Currently working on a new series of small paintings based on single lines of poems from the American poet Robert Creeley. The series is called ‘Single Lines’ with each individual painting having a title line from numerous poems. I was fortunate to meet Robert at the Vermont Studio Centre in the States several years ago and both Robert and his wife visited my studio one evening to see the work I was making there. Subsequently, he wrote a catalogue introduction and a poem for an exhibition of mine in London called ‘Shimmer’. Sadly he died a few years ago.
I’m updating these images as I go on Facebook and on this site under ‘Single Lines’.
This year is a project working year with no exhibitions planned in the foreseeable future.

The next exhibition will be at Art Paris which is held at the Grand Palais, Paris from April 5th to the 8th. I will be exhibiting a number of new paintings with the Frans Jacobs Galerie of Amsterdam.

Sorry for the lack of news, I had a computer failure.
Opening this Thursday -the 28th is a sow called ‘Conflict’ at the Soldiers of Woodstock Museum, Oxfordshire. I have five large paintings in the exhibition plus my film ‘Waterproof’. It’s in conjunction with a Jenny Holzer exhibition and installation at the nearby Blenheim Palace. The show runs for a month.

Off to Paris tomorrow for the pv -2pm to 10 pm – of Art Paris with the Frans Jacobs Gallery . It will be a long day . I have seven new paintings on show , all from The Dirty Yellow Series plus a launch of the book . There will be two large and five small which have not been exhibited before . Then its back in the studio and completing work for the next solo show in Farnham this summer at The New Ashgate Gallery (24th June to 5th August).

Just about to take several new works over to Amsterdam to be then taken to Art Paris where I will be exhibiting with Frans Jacobs Gallery at the end of March at the Grand Palais. I’m also pleased to say that the Qingdao Art Museum in China are buying five large paintings for their permanent collection .

I shall be exhibiting five large paintings including a new Dirty Yellow Series one at the Qingdao Biennale , Qingdao Art Museum China from December 25th . I believe the exhibition will run for a few months. The show is titled ‘Synthetic Colour’ and it explores the dialogue between Chinese and British watercolours.

The exhibition will be starting very soon at Cameron Contemporary in Hove/Brighton . I will be doing a gallery tour talk which will be quite informal on Wednesday 19th October at 7.30pm . In addition Fabrica are conducting their own Cultural tour of the show on Wednesday 2nd November from 2 to 4 pm , again free. There will be a Q&A with Robin Cameron . I will be exhibiting at Art 16 at London Olympia from May 20th-22nd with Waterhouse and Dodd . This will be my first showing with the gallery for a number of years and it will be very recent work . I will also be having my first solo exhibition in Brighton for 20 years this October . It will coincide with the launch of my book which is due to be published on September 30th . Again , a long time with a new posting – Facebook seems to take up more of my time now . However there is news ; The book will be coming out in late September /early October with Unicorn Publishing Group . It is written by James Attlee – and he has done a wonderful job . In fact I’m in the hands of a couple of ex Tate Publishing people so I’m pleased at what is being achieved . I’ll post more details as they come in and I know the Unicorn catalogue is being produced right now with further information . Also I will be exhibiting at Art Paris at the end of this month again with the Salamatina Gallery of New York . This is the third year running of exhibiting at this art fair .
Sadly, my gallerist in Amsterdam , Frans Jacobs died this week . I exhibited with Frans for about ten years and he first showed me at TEFAF (Maastricht) , Pan Art Fair, and other European art fairs and exhibitions . I am already missing the regular trips to Amsterdam – a city I have always thought as a fine place to live .
I hope to have a few book launches /exhibitions later in the year and I will post more about these both here and Facebook .

Sorry, long time for new news but I’m delighted to say that I’m currently talking with an art publisher about a monograph – hopefully to be published late next year.
There will be a regular edition and then a special collectors limited edition . More details very soon when I can confirm more . Otherwise I am working on a series of smaller works for Art Paris in March and I’m researching a possible new series of large paintings called ‘Night Crossing ‘ . That means some travelling to do .

Late news …The Frans Jacaobs Galerie in Amsterdam are planning a one day exhibition of my work to coincide with the performance in Maastricht on Sept 11th . It will be held in an exhibition space inside the Basilica in Maastricht right next to where the stage will be .

There are some interesting shows being pencilled in for the next few years , more details when they are confirmed .
First off, after ‘Sleepers’ will be a show built around the ‘Falling Between the Floorboards’ film and this will start on July 1st till the 31st at the New Ashgate Gallery , Farnham . There will be a Q@A session and continous showings of the film plus a lot of supporting material in the shape of paintings , workbooks , photo copies etc . We are still working on details but I think it will be an unusual and interesting exhibition .

An early painting of mine will be on show at the Realisme Art Fair next week in Amsterdam . It is part of the ING Art Collection and is entitled ‘Compartments 2’ 1979 . Very much part of the realist era and possibly my best painting of that time , it was the middle section of a three part series – resembling a film sequence .

Next exhibition will be the London Art Fair at the Islington Design Center from 14th to the 18th January 2009 . I will be as usual . showing a number of new works with the Waterhouse and Dodd Gallery .
Also , a new development for 2009 will be a print collaboration with King and McGraw print publishers who will be presenting a wide range of paintings available in several print sizes. King and McGraw are one of the most respected print publishes in the world . They work with the Tate gallery , MOMA New york, and countless museums around the world with distinguished high quality reproductions in print .

A group exhibition ‘Eros and Thanatos’ will be the next show at the Primo Piano Living Gallery in Lecce – in Puglia, Southern Italy. Three mid size paintings will be exhibited.
November 2007
The next exhibition will be at the Pan Art Fair , Amsterdam – 18th to 25th November with the Frans Jacobs Gallerie. There will be several works, new and old at the fair. There will also be some smaller works in a group exhibition at the Primo Piano Living Gallery in Lecce, southern Italy . This will be from mid December onwards.

The vernissage of Art Zurich – the art Fair will be on thursday the 11th October. I will be exhibiting quite a number of new works with Frans Jacobs Gallerie .

New solo exhibition of paintings called ‘White Noise’ will be at Waterhouse and Dodd, Cork Street, London from 17th October to 9th November . There will be a special preview on Saturday 13th October for the Cork Street/ Frieze Art Fair breakfast. The next exhibitions with Frans Jacobs /Judith Bouwknegt will be at the TEFAF Art Fair, Maastricht from 9th – 18th March and Art Cologne from 18th -22nd April .
January 2007
The next shows will be 20/21 International Art Fair at the Royal College of Art, London from 22nd to 25th with Waterhouse and Dodd. A larger showing of work will be at TEFAF, Maastricht from 9th to 18th March with Frans Jacobs/ Judith Bouwknegt.
The Scheringa Museum in Holland recently purchased ‘Boat 2’ from the ‘Above and Below’ exhibition in Paris.
Graham will be exhibiting at Art London, Islington from 17th to 21st Jan with Waterhouse and Dodd. Also at TEFAF, Maastricht from March 9th -18th with Frans Jacobs/Judith Bouwknegt and at Art Cologne, April 18th-22nd with the same gallery.
He is currently working on new paintings for a solo show in London at Waterhouse and Dodd from October 10th to November 2nd.
August 2006
There will be several new major exhibitions this October and November in Paris and Amsterdam. Graham will be having his next solo show titled ‘Above and Below’ at the Galerie Frans-Jacobs – Judith Bouwknegt, Rue Miromesnil 11, Paris from the 28th October.
He will also be exhibiting at Frans Jacobs- Judith Bouwknegt in Amsterdam in October and at the pAn Art Fair, Amsterdam from November 19th – 26th.
Graham will also be showing a new work in the Singer & Frielander/Sunday Times Watercolour Competition at the Mall Galleries, London from 13th -23rd September and Manchester Town Hall from 10th -21st October.

Graham will be showing next at Palm Beach ! West Palm Beach with Waterhouse and Dodd from 17th-21st Feb and at TEFAF Maastricht with Franz Jacogs from 9th-19th March. He will be exhibiting new work at the London Art Fair, Islington with Waterhouse & Dodd, from 18th to 22nd January, 2006.
Also he will be showing at the Realisme 06 ArtFair in Amsterdam with the Frans Jacobs Gallery, Amsterdam. This will run from 18th to 22nd January 2006.

Graham is currently exhibiting three new works at a Brighton Fringe Festival exhibition called ‘Erotica’ which is at the Argus Lofts Building and runs from 22nd April to 10th May. He then is participating in an art event with the Goethe Institute in Palermo. Sicily, from the end of April.
In June he will be exhibiting at the Art London art Fair in Chelsea from 8th to 12th, and he is currently working on a series of new paintings called ‘Thinking Bodies’ which will be at Waterhouse and Dodd in London from mid October to mid November. A full colour catalogue will accompany the show.

Graham will be exhibiting at Palm Beach 3 in Florida from January 14 -17th.
The next solo exhibition will be with Waterhouse and Dodd in New York at the Art in the 20c art fair, at the Armory. There will be many recent paintings on show.
Graham is currently exhibiting mostly smaller works at the Maltby Gallery, Winchester. There will be many new works as well as a few older ones and the exhibition runs through to November 19th.He will also be showing with Waterhouse and Dodd, for the first time, at Palm Beach 3, Florida, from Jan 13 – 17th 2005. Graham will be included in a large, international art exhibition and symposium organised by the Goethe Institut in Palermo, Sicily. The event will take place this October and will feature many of the world’s leading artists, writers and poets. Called ‘WELTANSCHAUUNG’ the project is designed to show the state of the world at this present time
Graham will also be having a solo exhibition of mostly smaller works a Maltby Contemporary Art in Winchester. This will run from the 5th October to 19th November 2004.

Dean has recently returned from an International Fellowship Award at the Vermont Studio Center in the U.S.A. There he was surrounded by the stimulating company of other artists, writers, and poets from diverse cultures and social backgrounds. Robert Creeley, the celebrated American poet and critic, responded so strongly to Dean’s work in Vermont that he has written a short introduction and a dedicated poem for the catalogue that accompanies this exhibition:
“Then one night, not long before we were to leave, Graham took us to his working studio and we saw there these extraordinary images, revelations, one wants to say, of person. His ways of compounding the usual agencies of watercolor were very much a part of what made the image so haunting- its layerings, accumulations, resonances, the substance yet float of what one saw. It was an uncanny and very moving experience – and long after we’d come home, it stayed in mind.” (Robert Creeley)
Dean’s paintings are imbued with a deeply humanist quality. He describes them as “holding pens” for human emotion. His main concern running through the work exhibited in Shimmer is that of the Twin. This is expressed through the Mirror Image and through the presence of the Internal Figure:
“ … I know now that there was a literal “twin” present in the image, that phenomenon of the vestigial, physical “double”, who is not born but non the less survives in the given body of its twin. So that may well be the “other”, as it may also be the literal surviving twin… Long ago I learned that art was more given to question than to answers, and that that was its human authority. Graham Dean’s presences are a profound instance.” (Robert Creeley)
Shimmer is the third solo exhibition by one of Britain’s leading figurative painters. Examples of his work may be seen in many public and private collections, including the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Arts Council, Sir Terence Conran’s Great Eastern Hotel, The Body Shop International, Anita Roddick and Peter Gabriel. This exhibition is Dean’s first solo show since turning 50 in 2001 and marks his 30 th year of unbroken practice.
